Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited condition that causes very high LDL cholesterol from birth, increasing the risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential. Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is an inherited cardiovascular risk factor that affects approximately 1 in 5 adults. Elevated Lp(a) increases the risk of heart attack, clogged arteries and aortic stenosis, even when LDL cholesterol is well controlled. Because Lp(a) is not included in a standard lipid panel, many people are unaware of their level. Current national and international guidelines advocate for universal Lp(a) screening.
